Would you believe me if I told you that internet was a big place? Well, it is. And because the internet is such a big place, creating unique content that people are actually going to see can be a little difficult.

Getting your website noticed in this day and age can be tricky, but it is also the key to success in this ever-growing digital era. Granted, this is much easier said than done, but fortunately there are steps you can take to simplify the process:

  1. Always know your audience. When writing online, deciding your demographic is the single most important thing because, if you don’t know who your audience is, then how do you know what to write?
  2. The direct approach is the best approach. Always be direct in your writing. When you ramble, the audience tends to lose interest.
  3. Be short and sweet. Be quick to your point. No one wants to read a novel to reach two points of information.
  4. Social media is your friend. In this modern age of social media, you’ll reach the widest audience if you are able to communicate across platforms. Don’t worry about being overly repetitive if you post the same thing across social platforms, because the more you do that, the more likely your audience is to notice.
  5. Use layman’s terms. If your audience can’t understand you, they will lose interest. Keep the technobabble to a minimum.
  6. Use the inverted pyramid model. Studies show that an individual will spend less than 20 seconds on a website, unless something stands out to them. Put your most important information first to communicate your message to those who will only spend a few seconds on your website.
  7. Research is key. Always research your topics. Never assume that your audience is stupid, as they will be able to tell how much research you put into your writing.
  8. Use your own voice. When writing for your website, it is important to not sound like a robot. Your audience wants to hear your opinions and your voice, so that is what you should give them.
  9. Study the competition. When starting out, be sure to study the people who are already successful in your field. You can learn a great deal from your competition, but always be cautious about copying their work as well as their actual marketing techniques. Be your own entity. Not a copy of someone else’s.
  10. Have a hook. As mentioned earlier, most individuals won’t spend a lot of time on your website unless you catch their attention within the first few moments. That’s your hook. Have an engaging introduction and your readers will likely stick around to the end.
